Located within Tenpin Bowling in Worcester, Houdini’s Escape Room Experience seems relatively small from the outside. However, once inside, you’ll find yourself shocked at the rooms within. One of its rooms, Room 13, is a 1950s-inspired escape room that blends elements of murder mystery, Cluedo, and psychological horror.

As detectives investigating a cold case in an abandoned hotel, your mission is to uncover what happened within its four walls after a recent disappearance. But be warned, some secrets are better left undiscovered…

Theming & Atmosphere

Room 13 captures the essence of a 1950s hotel with impressive period accurate decor. The open plan reception area and bar set the scene perfectly, while two ominous locked doors hint at the deeper mysteries within.

There is a noticeable attention to detail, with props like vintage eyeglasses, hats, smoking pipes, and feather boas available to help players fully embrace their detective roles. Subtle horror elements such as flickering lights, eerie noises, and unexpected movements create an immersive experience without veering into full blown terror.

Without giving too much away, expect to uncover some shocking revelations as you progress.

Staff & Live Actors

From the moment you arrive, Houdini’s staff ensure a pleasant experience. You’ll begin in the reception area, where you’ll sign a waiver, choose a team name, and ask any questions before heading to your chosen room.

Before entering Room 13, your Games Master provides a detailed backstory, setting the stage for the mystery ahead. Throughout the game, staff are available to offer hints if you get stuck, keeping the momentum going without spoiling the challenge.

As for the live actors, their presence is subtle yet effective, enhancing the atmosphere rather than overwhelming players. Expect unnerving sounds, shifting lights, and even objects moving unexpectedly, like a wine glass eerily rolling from the darkness.

Difficulty & Gameplay

Room 13 is moderately challenging, featuring a non linear structure that requires strong teamwork and observational skills. The dim lighting adds an extra layer of difficulty, making clue finding more immersive but also more challenging.

One of Houdini’s trademarks is secrecy so if your team fails to escape in time, the full story remains a mystery, left for the next group of detectives to uncover.

Final Verdict

Room 13 is perfect for fans of mystery, puzzles, and eerie atmospheres rather than outright horror. If you’re looking for a thrilling but not terrifying escape room, this is a fantastic choice. However, if you’re after an experience that will leave you running away in fear, you may want to explore elsewhere.

Room 13 is a fun way to challenge your mind, embrace your inner detective, and experience a uniquely immersive adventure.
